What Is a Virtual Intensive Outpatient Program at Embark?
Our insurance-reimbursed virtual intensive outpatient program connects you to select state-of-the-art outpatient clinics through our secure patient portal. This is a convenient way for your adolescent, teen, young adult, and family to receive our high-quality care when attending in person is not an option or a virtual setting is preferred. Our online IOP provides individual and group therapy for your son or daughter as well as family therapy sessions to help meet your family’s needs.
What Are the Benefits of a Virtual IOP?
Flexibility
A virtual IOP gives your adolescent, teen, or young adult the flexibility to connect with a therapist from home to overcome behavioral health challenges like post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), and substance abuse.
Industry-Leading Therapists
Embark’s industry-leading therapists offer virtual IOP treatment to adolescents, teens, and young adults in select locations.
Measurable Results
We provide measurable information that shows you how far your child has progressed in our virtual intensive outpatient program.
The CASA Framework
Embark’s virtual IOP is guided by CASA, a unique developmental framework used to create therapeutic relationships that help adolescents, teens, and young adults struggling with issues like borderline personality disorder (BPD), attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), and OCD. CASA stands for commitment, acceptance, security, and attunement (also known as empathy in action).
Convenience
Our secure patient portal lets your family easily access premium therapy from wherever you need us.
Accessibility
We aim to meet you where you’re at and that may be in a location that doesn’t have viable in-person treatment options. We can also serve as an option for those who prefer to be at home or are waiting to get into an in-person program. We’re here to help you navigate getting the quality care you need.
Attendance
Our patient portal will send you reminders, so you and your child never miss a session. In addition, the convenience of accessing therapy from wherever you are has been shown to increase attendance rates, which in turn helps drive better outcomes.
Simple Sign-Up Process

How a Virtual IOP Works
During online IOP treatment, your adolescent, teen, or young adult will spend three hours per day, four days per week in a variety of interactive group therapy sessions. They’ll also have weekly individual sessions and online family therapy with you once every other week.
We’ll make the experience as engaging as possible, with your child receiving supplies for experiential activities at the beginning of the 12-week curriculum. At the end of the program, we’ll work closely with you on discharge planning and next steps.
Virtual IOP Enrollment
You’ll connect with an intake clinician and coordinator to get familiar with the program and complete your intake paperwork.
- Your child will take a mental health assessment and psychiatric evaluation.
- You’ll log into the patient portal to access program information and see the IOP schedule.
- A therapist will reach out to discuss a treatment plan and goals for your child.
Virtual IOP FAQ
Our virtual intensive outpatient program services include prescribing and managing medications your adolescent, teen, or young adult needs during their healing journey.
Our virtual intensive outpatient programs for those struggling with mental health and substance abuse issues are insurance reimbursed.
Our virtual IOP can be very effective for:
- Adolescents, teens, and young adults who would benefit from a virtual IOP in the convenience of their home.
- Adolescents, teens, and young adults who are stepping down from a higher level of care, such as an inpatient hospitalization, or up from a lower level of care, such as weekly individual therapy.
- Families who feel they could benefit from online family therapy.
A virtual IOP can be a great option for adolescents, teens, young adults, or families who can benefit from the flexibility and accessibility of virtual treatment while staying at home and maintaining their daily schedule. For those who need more in-depth 24-hour care, residential treatment, wilderness therapy, transitional living, or an inpatient hospitalization may provide a more appropriate level of care.
Virtual experiential therapy is a form of activity-based therapy that brings awareness to your child’s experiences, feelings, inner thoughts, interactions, and needs. Examples of these interactive activities include:
- Painting and creative arts.
- Sculpting.
- Yoga and mindfulness.
- Music therapy.
During online family therapy sessions in a virtual IOP, your family will gain insights on how to communicate effectively and address conflict. You’ll also receive tools and resources that can help your family through its healing journey.
Your child will receive a psychiatric evaluation as part of their IOP enrollment process. In addition, during the online IOP program, a psychiatrist can prescribe medications to help treat your adolescent, teen, or young adult. They can also adjust dosages if needed. As your child steps down from IOP, we’ll ensure you have the continued psychiatry and medication management support needed.
At one of our online group therapy sessions within our virtual IOP, your adolescent, teen, or young adult will meet with peers to address mental health challenges, with the guidance of a therapist. Core skills taught in our online therapy sessions include mindfulness, emotion management, and distress tolerance. These skills will help your child change negative thinking patterns and promote positive behavioral changes.
Virtual counseling can be completed anywhere across the country and provides individual and family therapy options for adolescents, teens, and young adults as well as parent coaching. Our virtual IOP, available in Georgia, Maryland, Colorado, and Texas at this time, provides group, individual, and family therapy as well as online psychiatry and medication management services for adolescents, teens, and young adults who need extensive care. Clients must reside in those states to sign up for our virtual IOP.
