Calo Preteens and Calo Teens have merged to create Calo Programs, the first residential treatment programs focused on adopted preteens and teens. The programs implement a true relational-based treatment approach to create change from the inside out – heart first and behavior second. Uniquely focused and well-equipped to treat students and families impacted by trauma occurring in developmental periods, Calo Programs helps students develop a healthy sense of self, and often address attachment issues.

Our students learn to develop attuned, empathetic and safe relationships through healthy, repetitive relational therapy. Implementing a relational treatment model, Calo uses evidence-based attachment research combined with the science of neurobiology to create real change. Their proprietary treatment approach is comprehensive and holistic, helping students find co-regulation and joy. Going beyond behavior modification, the specially trained staff at Calo seeks to understand what causes behaviors and feelings, correcting the core in an accepting and non-judgmental environment.

Calo Programs uses the Commitment, Acceptance, Secure, Attunement (CASA) Treatment Model to establish acceptance and security. Through the commitment and acceptance of caregivers, students can feel secure and attune, beginning to form healthy and safe relationships. The CASA Model is the neurobiological framework for creating secure relationships.

Students participate in weekly family and individual therapy, although at times, a crisis may change the frequency of the therapy. All therapists hold at least a Master’s Degree and therapy sessions are tailored to meet the unique needs of each family and student. Calo Programs rely on family support and encourage family members to visit every 4-8 weeks. Each student is also encouraged to call his or her family weekly. Additionally, Calo hosts 4 annual parent events to give families an opportunity to connect with others who are on the same journey while engaging therapeutically with their child and therapists.

Calo primarily helps students impacted by trauma such as from adoptions (or more accurately relinquishment from birth parents), chronic stress, disruptions in early childhood, and inconsistent care from caregivers. Most students at Calo have struggled to be in a healthy relationship with their family and/or peers, often experience emotional dysregulation, and have difficulty maintaining safe behavior at home or in school. Students come to Calo Programs struggling with adoption issues, identity issues, reactive attachment disorder, and/or personality disorders. The average stay for students is 12-15 months as they prioritize emotional, mental, behavioral, and physical health.

Calo Programs are open to both females and males. Calo has a preteen program for boys and girls between the ages of 10-13 while their teen program serves older teens, ages 14-18. Both programs use unique interventions like adventure therapy, canine therapy and neurofeedback therapy while also prioritizing academics and helping students balance the demands of life, play and school.

Meet The Team

Aerial Mariman

Position: Neurotherapy Manager
Aerial is originally from the Quad Cities (IA/IL border), but moved to the lake in October of 2020. Aerial attended St. Ambrose University, majoring in Criminal Justice. She has held many different positions in security and public safety, leading up to a position in the Enterprise Security Operations Center at the John Deere World Headquarters, in Moline, IL. A promotion came shortly after, as a Global Incident Analyst – where she was responsible for monitoring, analyzing, and reporting potential and impactful events affecting John Deere facilities all over the world. Leaving was difficult, but well-worth her next adventure as a Private Investigator, where she spent a year traveling all over Iowa, Illinois, and Missouri, taking on cases. After a year of being on the road, Aerial decided to stay home with her dogs and start her own business as a Graphic Design Artist. Unfortunately, Covid hit soon after – putting the art dream on hold – and moving on as a live-in caregiver for an elderly woman with Alzheimer’s, which is why she now lives at the Lake! Aerial started working at Calo in September 2021, as a Youth Coach/Mentor, but now works as a Neurofeedback Technician and loves it! In her free time, she enjoys spending time with her dogs, nature photography, traveling, being in the woods, rollerblading, singing karaoke, and birdwatching!

Chris Austin, MA, LPC, NCC

Position: Executive Clinical Director
Chris relocated to the Lake Ozark area from Kansas City in 2014 for the specific purpose of becoming a member of the Calo clinical team. She left a private practice of 25 years to pursue this position, after hearing of the meaningful work being done at Calo, and recognizing the parallels between her own philosophy in the treatment of children and adolescents with trauma and attachment needs, and the philosophy and practices at Calo. Chris received a Masters degree in counseling psychology from the University of Missouri-Kansas City, where she graduated with honors. She also holds a degree in Special Education, and worked as a teacher and school counselor for ten years prior to entering private practice. Early in her career, Chris recognized the need, and became aware of her strong passion for helping children and adolescents and their families with the challenges of facilitating healing and growth following experiences of early childhood neglect, trauma, and family separations. Her practice focused on children who were adopted, were in the process of being adopted, or were in the foster care system awaiting some type of permanency in their lives. She has extensive experience in individual and family therapy services, both in the office and in the home setting. Through the course of her work in private practice, Chris worked for 10 years with an associate professor of psychiatry at Columbia University who specializes in attachment and trauma, along with a team of therapists from around the country, treating families through intensive treatment experiences. This experience provided her with valuable training in working with families in crisis. Through this process she participated in a research study and co-published the results of that study documenting the success of the intensive treatment model. Chris maintains her excitement about the opportunity to work with the students at Calo and their families, as well as the specialized team of professionals. She feels privileged to be a part of the growth and positive change of the Calostudents and their families. Chris and her husband, Scott are enjoy the lake area, with many visits from their three adult sons and their families, which include two grandchildren.
