Cabin John Outpatient Program FAQ

During outpatient counseling at our Cabin John clinic, your adolescent, teen, or young adult will meet with a local therapist while maintaining their daily schedule. For those who have moderate mental health symptoms and a daily routine that’s not negatively impacting their mental well-being, outpatient treatment may be a good option.

Outpatient visits to our clinic can involve weekly counseling sessions with one of our Cabin John therapists. We also offer group therapy through our intensive outpatient and therapeutic day treatment programs.

There are many benefits to outpatient treatment at our Cabin Johnclinic. Our programs allow adolescents, teens, and young adults to maintain work and school schedules and receive support from friends and family while receiving counseling — and at a more affordable cost on average than most inpatient treatment options.

The main difference between weekly individual counseling sessions, the intensive outpatient program, and the therapeutic day treatment program at our Cabin John clinic is how long your adolescent, teen, or young adult will spend in treatment. Weekly individual therapy sessions require the least amount of time and can be scheduled at a specific time of day. An intensive outpatient program takes place in the evening to accommodate school and work schedules and typically meets three hours a day, three to four days per week, for a total of nine to 12 hours per week. A therapeutic day treatment program typically meets 5.5 hours a day, five days a week, for a total of 27.5 hours per week.

The goal of outpatient therapy at our program is to help adolescents, teens, and young adults overcome difficult behavioral health and substance abuse issues like anxiety and depression through visiting one of our Cabin John therapists for weekly individual counseling sessions or an intensive outpatient or therapeutic day treatment program.

The main difference between inpatient hospitalization and outpatient treatment is the treatment setting. Our outpatient services, which include an IOP and a therapeutic day treatment program, provide a good option for adolescents, teens, and young adults whose needs can be met by visiting a therapist in their local Cabin John neighborhood while living at home and maintaining their daily routine. An inpatient hospitalization is a good choice for those who need to leave their home and receive dedicated 24-hour care in a hospital setting to overcome mental health and substance abuse issues.

The length of outpatient treatment depends on each youth’s particular needs and whether they’re attending weekly individual therapy sessions or participating in a therapeutic day treatment or intensive outpatient program in Cabin John. On average, outpatient treatment at our clinic can last from three months to one year. If a deeper level of service is needed, adolescents, teens, and young adults can step up a level of care to an inpatient hospitalization.

While we are new to this program, EVERYTHING from the first intake call to coming daily to the program has been exceptional. We are not new to PHP programs, and had a VERY BAD experience at one in Sterling, Virginia where they were punitive and did not treat my child as human, nonetheless a client of theirs. Point is, I have something to compare this experience to, and I can't rave enough about the staff and the care they have taken on our journey. Seeking out a program like this means that life is very difficult to begin with, but in my experience, once I made the decision to seek this facility out- everything has been incredibly supportive, collaborative, and transparent. While my child still questions if they will 'get better', they are trusting the process and I can tell by the care of the staff - that this will change her life. One thing that stands out to me immediately is that many of the staff have been there for years. I repeat, years. That in itself is incredible. Even those that are newer all have a collective belief in the process and I really haven't had a bad interaction at all. As a parent it is important for you to communicate and coordinate with them, as it does take a village, and the staff have always been accommodating and supportive. I will update my review as we continue through the program, but for those parents that are looking at the many options that exist, look no further. You have compassionate humans that will treat your child with respect and will lead with empathy along their journey. I have no hesitation that we are in the right place - I hope all of you who read this have comfort that not all PHP programs are created equally.

Our family has found Embark life-giving. In particular, her individual and family therapist (the same person) was simply a human full of love -- on top of being a consummate clinician. The building and setting are beautiful and healing. We ardently wish for more therapy practices to confront rising levels of anxiety and depression. Teens can grow and flourish under good care (and an enlightened society).

Embark at Cabin John has become a second home for our child. They were with her and for her 100% through this very difficult journey and have led her and us to much firmer ground in the past few months. The education we received on DBT skills was crucial and will serve us well in the future, both individually and as a family. Our child's therapist (who was also our family therapist) was able to challenge our child to move deeper into her issues and guided us all with unconditional positive regard and support. The Cabin John setting is peaceful and beautiful and was a place that our child felt safe and supported during the hardest time in her life. We are beyond grateful.

The best of the best. They really helped my son get his self esteem and confidence back. Lee was our therapist, but my son loved everyone here. There was many people helping my son. I see that this is a team that you can trust. It’s important to work with people you can trust, especially in this field. My son and my family always got respect and care, while getting genuine help. And we never felt alone. You just have to trust the treatment plan. They will help you through the process. This is not a medical treatment, it’s a journey. We are more confident as a family with the plans and tools that they provided us. My son always had a great time in groups and looked forward to therapy. When we were first looking for a program, we were scared and uncertain. We didn’t know what to do. We are so so happy that it worked out. Every staff member was helpful 24-7 and were available after hours to help. We were crying and praying and looking for an answer. We feel like this was an answered prayer and we feel so good that we always have people to reach out to if we need it.I don’t see these people as staff members, they acted more like friends. I’m so grateful. If your family is struggling, please reach out and trust the process. Everything will be ok. That’s what we found out.

Sabrina and Robyn have been hosting virtual cooking classes on a monthly basis called “Meatless Mondays” which has been so much fun! Not only have I learned some delicious new healthy recipes (really, surprisingly delicious, and my family has loved everything so far), but they have also incorporated Mindfulness and nutrition lessons into the session. I can’t wait for next month’s class! Thank you ladies for teaching me more about healthy eating and the enjoyment that comes with it.

My experience connecting people with Embark has been overwhelmingly positive. I find their staff to be warm, compassionate, and committed to helping adolescents and their families. On various occasions, staff have gone completely above and beyond to provide appropriate resources and referrals. An especially outstanding aspect is the staff following up and checking in to ensure quality care and continuity. I really appreciate their staff!

I cannot even begin to describe how helpful my time in Patomac Pathaways IOP was. The counselors are phenomenal and the DBT Model itself is life-changing. I also really enjoyed the weekly experientials. We went hiking, did an escape room, did a crazy ropes course, took a photography walk (with disposable cameras! These photos are ones I took during the experiential), did yoga and Zumba, painted, and more. My life has been changed and is continuing to be changed for the better. Thank you, Patomac Pathaways, for helping me to start living a life worth living.
